What is BERDO?
Building Emissions Reduction and Disclosure Ordinance (BERDO) is Boston’s building emissions law designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from large buildings. Covered buildings must annually report energy and water usage and comply with progressively stricter emissions limits starting in 2025 or 2030, with all buildings expected to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Although only 5% of Boston buildings are covered under BERDO, they account for nearly 40% of the city’s carbon emissions, making BERDO one of Boston’s most impactful climate initiatives.
